Our work
DEMADES project is a forward-looking research initiative focused on developing advanced nanostructured electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production. Operating at Technology Readiness Level 3 (TRL 3), the project aims to demonstrate proof-of-concept through both analytical and experimental methods. Utilizing eco-friendly deep eutectic solvents (DESs), particularly those based on choline chloride, the team synthesizes and optimizes novel catalysts composed of Ni, Co, Mo, Fe alloys, and S, P-containing composites. These catalysts are applied to metal and carbon-based foam substrates to enhance electrocatalytic activity and stability in water-based alkaline solutions. Comprehensive electrochemical evaluations, including measurements of catalytic activity, Faradaic efficiency, and durability, are conducted to assess performance. A life cycle assessment is also performed to evaluate the environmental and economic sustainability of the developed processes. The project emphasizes the formation of theories describing the relationship between catalyst composition, structure, and efficiency, which are validated experimentally. Scalability studies are undertaken to assess the feasibility of industrial implementation. Collaboration among experts in materials science, electrochemistry, catalysis, and chemical engineering ensures a multidisciplinary approach. Through these efforts, DEMADES contributes to advancing knowledge in electrocatalysis and supports the transition towards sustainable hydrogen production.
