Major Success for DEMADES:
PROMETHEUS Selected for Horizon Europe Funding

We are delighted to share an important achievement building on the scientific results and international collaborations developed within the DEMADES project.
The Horizon Europe proposal PROMETHEUS – PROject for MEaningful Twinning in Hydrogen Energy United Science (Proposal ID 101339154), coordinated by the DEMADES project team and CEMEA SAS, has been successfully evaluated and selected for funding. The project is currently entering the Grant Agreement Preparation stage.
PROMETHEUS brings together CEMEA SAS, Fraunhofer IKTS, Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and ADDSEN in an international partnership focused on strengthening research excellence and innovation capacity in the field of hydrogen energy. The submitted proposal has a total requested budget of EUR 1.5 million. The original submission documentation confirms CEMEA SAS as coordinator and the participation of the German, Belgian and Slovak partners.
The success of PROMETHEUS represents an important continuation of the research direction developed within DEMADES. Knowledge gained through the development and characterization of advanced electrocatalytic materials, electrochemical evaluation, sustainable hydrogen technologies and international cooperation provides a strong foundation for the next stage of our research.
For the DEMADES team, this achievement is particularly significant because one of the project objectives was to use the expertise, results and partnerships established during DEMADES to initiate new competitive national and international research projects. PROMETHEUS demonstrates that this strategy has successfully translated DEMADES activities into a new European-level research opportunity.
The next step is the completion of the Grant Agreement Preparation process, followed by the launch of the new project.

DEMADES Final Consortium Meeting: Integration of Results from All Work Packages

The DEMADES project consortium held its final all-partner meeting, bringing together representatives of
CEMEA SAS, IMR SAS and IEE SAS to jointly review, discuss and integrate the scientific and technological results obtained throughout the project.
The meeting represented an important final integration step of the DEMADES project. The partners presented and extensively discussed the results generated within WP1–WP5, with particular emphasis on connecting catalyst synthesis and processing conditions with structural and chemical characteristics, electrochemical performance, long-term stability, sustainability and future scale-up potential.
The discussion integrated the main outcomes of the individual work packages:
- WP1 – Catalysts preparation: synthesis and optimization of Ni-based, Ni/MoS₂, Ni/MXene, Ni₁₋ₓCoₓS, MoFeNiP and three-dimensional electrode systems, including electrochemical and electroless preparation approaches;
- WP2 – Catalysts characterization: integration of morphological, structural and chemical characterization data with synthesis parameters and electrochemical behaviour;
- WP3 – Electrochemical performance evaluation: comparative assessment of HER activity, overpotential, Tafel behaviour, electrochemical impedance and stability, together with results obtained using the laboratory/pilot electrolyser;
- WP4 – Sustainability assessment: discussion of catalyst durability, material and energy requirements, environmental aspects and recommended performance metrics for long-term evaluation;
- WP5 – Theories formation and scaling-up potential: integration of the results into a common framework linking synthesis → structure and interfaces → physicochemical properties → HER performance → lifetime → scalability.
Based on the joint evaluation, the consortium identified the most promising material platforms for further development and scale-up. Particular attention was given to optimized DES-electrodeposited Ni coatings, Ni/MXene and Ni/MoS₂ composites, Ni₀.₄Co₀.₆S, C-MoFeNiP materials and modified three-dimensional Ni foam electrodes.
The partners also discussed the next steps required to move from laboratory-scale catalyst screening towards more technologically relevant validation. These include testing at higher current densities, extended durability measurements, evaluation of catalyst degradation and surface reconstruction, improved process reproducibility, optimization of material and energy consumption, and validation on larger electrode areas and in electrolyser configurations.
An important part of the meeting was dedicated to the future sustainability and exploitation of the DEMADES results. The consortium discussed scientific publications, intellectual property, collaboration with industrial and international partners, and follow-up national and European research initiatives building on the knowledge, methodologies and partnerships established within DEMADES.
The final consortium meeting therefore completed the integration of the results generated across the individual work packages and provided a common scientific and technological basis for the future development of sustainable electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production.
DEMADES Research Featured in the SAVinci Science Documentary Series (8 August 2026)

Research carried out within the DEMADES project is featured in the new SAVinci documentary series of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS), which premieres on STVR Dvojka on 8 August 2026 at 11:35 CET. The programme presents internationally competitive research conducted at the Centre for Advanced Materials Application (CEMEA SAS), with a special focus on innovative materials for sustainable hydrogen production.
In the documentary, Assoc. Prof. Anna Kityk, coordinator of the DEMADES project, introduces the development of advanced three-dimensional electrode architectures designed to improve the efficiency of hydrogen production technologies. The research explores environmentally friendly approaches to engineering catalytic materials that can support clean hydrogen generation, contributing to the transition towards low-carbon energy systems.
The DEMADES project combines advanced materials science, electrochemistry, and green surface engineering to develop next-generation catalytic materials for energy conversion applications. By tailoring the structure and functionality of electrode materials, the project aims to enhance catalytic performance while promoting sustainable manufacturing routes with reduced environmental impact.
The inclusion of DEMADES in the SAVinci series highlights the growing importance of research on green hydrogen and advanced materials in addressing global energy challenges. As hydrogen becomes an increasingly important component of future renewable energy systems, innovations in catalyst design and materials processing will play a key role in improving the efficiency and sustainability of hydrogen technologies.

DEMADES Project Showcased at ANM 2026
(22–24 July 2026)

Researchers involved in the DEMADES project took part in the 26th International Conference on Advanced Nanomaterials (ANM 2026), hosted by the University of Aveiro, Portugal, from 22–24 July 2026. The annual ANM conference provides an international forum for presenting recent advances in nanomaterials and their applications across energy, environmental, and engineering fields.
For the DEMADES project, the Hydrogen Energy session was especially valuable, bringing together experts working on photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, advanced surface engineering, and materials for sustainable hydrogen production. The session offered an excellent opportunity to learn about emerging trends while exchanging ideas with researchers from different institutions.
During the conference, the DEMADES team presented the poster "Electrosynthesized TiO₂ Nanotubular Films on Ti-6Al-4V Using Deep Eutectic Solvents for Coupled Photocatalytic and Hydrogen-Evolution Performance". The work highlighted the use of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) for the electrochemical fabrication of TiO₂ nanotubular structures, demonstrating their potential for enhancing photocatalytic activity and hydrogen evolution.
The poster presentation generated productive discussions with conference participants, particularly on the role of DES-based anodization in tailoring surface morphology and its influence on catalytic performance. These interactions provided valuable scientific feedback and identified opportunities for future collaboration in the field of advanced functional materials.
Participation in ANM 2026 contributed to increasing the visibility of the DEMADES project, promoting the dissemination of its research outcomes, and strengthening connections with the international nanomaterials and hydrogen-energy research community.
DEMADES Team Inspires Young Scientists at the SAS Summer School 2026 (13-17 July 2026)

Members of the DEMADES project team from the Centre for Advanced Materials Application of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (CEMEA SAS) actively participated in the Summer School of Young Scientists 2026 as supervisors and mentors, guiding participants through an exciting programme of scientific experiments and hands-on laboratory activities.
This year's Summer School offered an exceptional opportunity for young scholars to experience modern scientific research firsthand. The programme combined chemistry, molten salt systems, electrochemistry, inorganic materials science, glass technology, and green hydrogen technologies into an engaging series of experiments designed to demonstrate how fundamental science contributes to the development of sustainable energy solutions.
Participants carried out a wide range of laboratory activities, including the preparation and investigation of molten salt systems, synthesis of inorganic materials, electrochemical experiments, and the preparation of lithium silicate glass using high-temperature processing. They also explored the fascinating properties of liquid nitrogen, gaining practical insight into cryogenic phenomena through interactive demonstrations.
One of the highlights of the programme was the opportunity to produce green hydrogen independently. Using electricity generated by photovoltaic solar panels and compact wind turbines, participants operated a water electrolyser and observed how renewable energy can be converted into clean hydrogen fuel. This hands-on experiment demonstrated one of the key technologies supporting Europe's transition towards a low-carbon and climate-neutral energy system.
The students also learned about the operating principles of hydrogen fuel cells, discovering how hydrogen can be converted back into electricity with high efficiency and zero harmful emissions at the point of use. The programme culminated in a live demonstration of a hydrogen-powered vehicle, allowing participants to see how green hydrogen can be applied in sustainable transportation.
This demonstration infrastructure became available at CEMEA thanks to the successful combination of support from the Small Grant Scheme of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the DEMADES project, enabling both cutting-edge research and educational outreach activities.
Beyond its scientific research, the DEMADES project is strongly committed to the popularization of green hydrogen technologies and raising public awareness of their importance for the future energy transition. The project team is actively engaged not only in developing advanced catalysts and functional materials for efficient hydrogen production and electrochemical energy conversion, but also in communicating these technologies to school and university students, teachers, and the wider public. Through educational events, demonstrations, and outreach activities, DEMADES aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers while improving public understanding of the crucial role that hydrogen and advanced materials will play in achieving a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.

The DEMADES project gained additional visibility through the participation of its project leader, Dr. Anna Kityk from the CEMEA SAS, in the television programme Spektrum 24, broadcast on the JOJ 24 news channel.
The programme explored the role of green hydrogen in the transition towards sustainable and low-carbon energy systems. During the interview, Dr. Kityk discussed the opportunities and current challenges associated with green hydrogen production, its potential applications across different industrial sectors, and the importance of continued research in developing efficient and environmentally responsible technologies.
The discussion also highlighted the contribution of advanced materials and innovative surface engineering approaches to improving hydrogen production processes. The DEMADES project team was proud to organize Sci-Connect 2026, an international informal gathering that brought together researchers from across the Slovak Academy of Sciences in an atmosphere of friendship, openness, and mutual inspiration.
Now in its second year, Sci-Connect has become much more than a social event; it has evolved into a celebration of the values that define modern science: collaboration, diversity, inclusion, and international cooperation.
This year's central theme, "Science Without Borders," reflects a simple yet powerful belief: science belongs to everyone.
Scientific discovery knows no borders of nationality, gender, age, language, or culture. Great ideas emerge when people with different experiences, backgrounds, and perspectives come together with a shared curiosity to solve global challenges.
At DEMADES, we believe that innovation flourishes in environments where every researcher feels respected, valued, and empowered to contribute. Whether an experienced scientist, an early-career researcher, a PhD student, or an international colleague beginning a new journey in Slovakia, everyone plays an important role in advancing scientific excellence.
Research is driven not only by knowledge and technology but also by people. Strong scientific communities are built on trust, communication, and meaningful human connections. Sci-Connect 2026 provided researchers from various institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences with an opportunity to meet outside their laboratories, exchange ideas, discover common interests, and build new friendships that may grow into future scientific collaborations. The informal setting encouraged open discussions across disciplines, generations, and cultures, demonstrating that some of the most valuable scientific partnerships begin with a simple conversation.
One of the greatest strengths of today's scientific community is its diversity. Researchers from different countries bring unique perspectives and expertise. Women and men contribute equally to scientific progress. Young scientists introduce fresh ideas, while experienced researchers provide invaluable knowledge and mentorship. School Students Discover the Future of Green Energy at the DEMADES Green Energy Masterclass
(3 June 2026)
On 3 June 2026, the team of the DEMADES project from the Centre for Advanced Materials Application (CEMEA) of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, supported by the Small Grant Scheme of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, participated in a Green Energy Masterclass organized during the excursion of second-year students from the School for Exceptionally Talented Children and Gymnasium (Škola pre mimoriadne nadané deti a gymnázium – ŠpMNDaG) in Bratislava.
The event provided students with a unique opportunity to explore advanced renewable energy technologies and learn about ongoing research activities that contribute to the development of sustainable energy systems and a low-carbon future.
During the exhibition, the DEMADES project team demonstrated a complete green hydrogen value chain powered by renewable energy sources. Students observed green hydrogen production using electricity generated by photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine, illustrating how renewable energy can be transformed into a clean and versatile energy carrier.
The demonstrations included a PEM electrolyser for hydrogen production, a hydrogen-powered vehicle showcasing the practical application of hydrogen in clean mobility, and a large-scale alkaline electrolyser connected to a full-scale photovoltaic installation. Students also learned about the latest advances in electrode materials and electrochemical technologies that are being developed to improve the efficiency, durability, and sustainability of future energy systems.
The hands-on demonstrations enabled participants to follow the entire process from renewable electricity generation through hydrogen production and storage to its practical utilization. Through direct interaction with researchers and real-world technologies, complex concepts related to green hydrogen, renewable energy integration, and advanced materials became more understandable and accessible.
The students showed great enthusiasm throughout the visit, actively engaging in discussions and asking numerous insightful questions. They were fascinated by the innovative technologies, inspired by the research activities, and excited to learn how scientific discoveries are contributing to the transition towards a sustainable energy future. The experience helped bring the concept of green energy closer to the younger generation and demonstrated the important role that research and innovation play in addressing global energy challenges.
The event highlighted the importance of connecting scientific research with education and public outreach. By presenting state-of-the-art technologies engagingly and interactively, the DEMADES project helped raise awareness of renewable energy solutions and inspired students to consider future careers in science, technology, and engineering.

DEMADES Project Demonstrates Advanced Materials and Renewable Energy Technologies to University Students (27 May 2026)
Members of the DEMADES project participated in an educational and research-oriented excursion organized for 2nd year chemistry students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Comenius University in Bratislava. The excursion took place at the research facilities of CEMEA SAS and IIC SAS, where students had the opportunity to explore advanced materials research, innovative technologies, and current scientific developments connected to sustainable energy and space-oriented applications.
During the visit, DEMADES project achievements were presented in the form of a research-based exhibition and interactive scientific presentation. Students were introduced to several cutting-edge research topics, including Martian environment simulations, advanced materials for extreme conditions, and sustainable technologies for future space habitats.
One of the most attractive parts of the exhibition focused on Mars exploration technologies. Students explored models of Martian soil simulants and detailed 3D printed Mars bases designed for future extraterrestrial habitation. Researchers explained advanced 3D printing technologies and additive manufacturing approaches suitable for constructing infrastructure under harsh planetary conditions using local resources.
The presentation also highlighted renewable energy production technologies and sustainable energy systems developed within the DEMADES framework. Special attention was dedicated to hydrogen and oxygen generation through electrolysis powered by photovoltaic (PV) electricity. DEMADES Team Visited a Seminar on Establishing Spin-Off Companies within the Slovak Academy of Sciences (13 May 2026)

On 13 May 2026, members of the DEMADES project participated in the professional seminar entitled "Establishing Spin-Off Companies by Institutions of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAS)", organized by the Technology Transfer Office of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (TTO, CEMEA SAS).
The seminar focused on important topics related to technology transfer, commercialization of research results, and the development of innovation-driven entrepreneurial activities within the research environment of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. The possibilities and conditions for establishing spin-off companies within SAS institutions were presented by the Head of the Technology Transfer Office, Miroslav Kubiš.
The event attracted significant interest and strong participation from representatives of public research institutions of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, including statutory representatives and researchers actively involved in innovation and applied research activities.
The seminar addressed several key areas connected with the establishment and operation of spin-off companies, including entrepreneurial activities of public research institutions, legal and organizational conditions required for creating spin-off entities, participation of SAS public research institutions in spin-off companies, and the differences between spin-off and spin-out models.
The program also included practical aspects related to company establishment processes and support opportunities provided by the Technology Transfer Office of SAS.
Participation in this seminar provided valuable insights into the effective transfer of scientific knowledge and research outcomes into practical applications and innovation-oriented business activities. Such initiatives are closely aligned with the DEMADES project objectives focused on advancing applied research, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration between science and industry.

DEMADES Team at the Launch of PERUN Supercomputer (27 April 2026)
The DEMADES project team participated in the official launch of the PERUN supercomputing infrastructure at the Slovak Academy of Sciences on April 27, 2026, an event that marked a major step forward for high-performance computing in Slovakia and a particularly important moment for research efforts relying on advanced simulations and data-driven methods. With a peak performance of 14.5 PFLOP/s, PERUN significantly expands the national computational capacity and creates new opportunities for tackling complex scientific challenges that were previously out of reach. For the DEMADES project, which focuses on designing efficient catalysts for green hydrogen production, access to such infrastructure is not only beneficial but also essential.
The DEMADES research is built on a close integration of density functional theory (DFT), artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning (ML), all of which require substantial computational resources to reach their full potential. At the atomic level, DFT provides detailed insight into catalyst behavior, allowing the team to understand adsorption energies, reaction mechanisms, and the electronic structure of candidate materials. However, the number of possible material compositions and geometries relevant for HER is vast, making purely physics-based exploration too slow when applied in isolation. By combining these simulations with AI and ML models trained on DFT data, the DEMADES team is able to predict catalytic properties across large chemical spaces, identify promising candidates, and guide further simulations in a highly efficient way.
The availability of PERUN enables this approach to scale to a new level, allowing large datasets to be generated, more sophisticated models to be trained, and significantly broader regions of the materials landscape to be explored. This creates a continuous feedback loop in which high-quality simulation data informs ML models, and those models in turn accelerate the discovery of new catalyst structures that can be validated again through high-accuracy calculations. Such an approach not only speeds up discovery but also improves the reliability of predictions, which is crucial for translating theoretical insights into practical catalytic systems.
Participation in the opening of PERUN also reflects the strong alignment of the DEMADES project with broader national and European priorities in artificial intelligence and high-performance computing. The discussions held during the event emphasized that modern research increasingly depends on the ability to process large volumes of data and solve computationally intensive problems, and that investments in infrastructure such as PERUN are key to maintaining competitiveness in science and innovation. For the DEMADES team, this new capability represents an opportunity further to strengthen its position within the international research community and to contribute to the development of sustainable energy technologies.
By leveraging PERUN, the DEMADES project moves closer to its goal of accelerating the discovery and optimization of HER catalysts through a combination of first-principles modeling and data-driven methods. On 11 March 2026, Bratislava hosted the "Grants & Startups" event, bringing together more than 100 startup founders, investors, and innovation ecosystem stakeholders to discuss an important question: Do grants make sense for startups?
The discussion highlighted that grant funding plays an important role in supporting innovation and early-stage ventures. Several examples from Slovakia demonstrated how startups and technology projects have successfully used grant funding to advance their technologies, enter the market, and attract investors. At the same time, the panel openly addressed challenges within the current funding landscape, discussing what works well, what needs improvement, and which new support instruments are being prepared.
Members of the DEMADES project team participated in the event, engaging with representatives of the startup ecosystem and contributing to discussions on how grant funding can support the development and scaling of innovative technologies.

The publication contributes to the rapidly evolving field of data-driven materials science and supports the strategic research direction of the project toward advanced catalytic systems.
The published work reflects the growing recognition that conventional catalyst discovery methods based on trial-and-error experimentation are no longer sufficient to address current technological and energy challenges. Košice Team of DEMADES Presents Research and Collaboration Opportunities at Traditional Day of Open Doors (12 November 2025)

On 12 November 2025, within the Week of Science and Technology in Slovakia, Institute of Materials Research of Slovak Academy of Sciences (ÚMV SAV, v. v. i.) in Košice opened its doors to the public as part of the traditional Day of Open Doors.
In the innovative electrotechnical laboratory, the Košice team of DEMADES project presented ongoing research focused on the development of advanced nanostructured electrocatalysts for green hydrogen production. This work is part of the research initiative Development of advanced nanostructured materials for electrocatalysis using environmentally friendly deep eutectic solvents, financed by European Union through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of Slovak Republic.
Visitors learned about the principles of green chemistry, the fundamentals of electrocatalysis, and the nanostructuring techniques used in the preparation of new, efficient, and sustainable catalysts. These materials are based on Ni, Co, Mo, Fe, and composites containing sulfur and phosphorus, and are designed to replace expensive platinum-based electrodes.
DEMADES project connects research teams from different regions of Slovakia, ensuring a multidisciplinary collaboration among specialists in materials science, electrochemistry, catalysis, and chemical engineering. The Košice team actively participates in research, dissemination of results, and outreach activities, strengthening cooperation between institutions and engaging the public in modern scientific challenges.

Kick-Off Meeting

The Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative (IAM-I) is an international non-profit association leading the IAM4EU partnership, which aims to build a Europe-wide, cross-sector R&I ecosystem to accelerate the market uptake of sustainable advanced materials. IAM-I brings together stakeholders across the full materials value chain to foster innovation for a digital and circular economy.
As DEMADES project leader, A. Kityk proudly represents the team within this initiative, focusing on innovative materials for Energy.
On October 8, 2025, A. Kityk participated in the kick-off meeting of the "Energy" team, where members discussed future work plans, clarified their mission, and set directions for collaboration. DEMADES Project Team at Challenger Science Workshop: From Research Idea to Business (7/10/2025)

It has already become a great tradition for our DEMADES project team to take part in Challenger Science workshops, and this week was no exception!
On October 7, 2025, we joined the inspiring session "Identifying Commercial Opportunities & Lean Startup", led by Vojtech Kadlec. The workshop was an in-depth exploration of the innovation process, examining how to assess the added value of our ideas, enhance manufacturing, strengthen branding and marketing, and establish a solid foundation for commercial success.
A highlight of the day was the discussion around Cambridge Radar, a practical tool that helps evaluate the level of innovation and identify areas for improvement. Through interactive exercises, teamwork, and engaging discussions, we gained valuable insights into transforming innovative ideas into impactful business solutions.
We are excited to continue our journey from idea to business together with ESET and Civitta, and to keep pushing the boundaries of innovation within DEMADES project!

Workshop on Customer Discovery with KU Leuven Technology Transfer Expert

On 30 September 2025, DEMADES project team participated in an insightful workshop on Customer Discovery, led by Zuzana Kasanova, Business Development Manager at KU Leuven (Belgium).
The session introduced to our team key concepts in:
-Identifying and searching for potential customers;
-Effective communication and interaction strategies;
-Improving approaches to building and maintaining customer relationships.
For us, as patent holders and innovators, these insights are particularly valuable in learning how to present and commercialize intellectual property results, as well as in developing spin-offs and start-ups. Understanding customer needs and engagement strategies is crucial in bridging the gap between groundbreaking research and real-world market applications.

DEMADES & CEMEA SAS at European Researchers' Night 2025
The European Researchers' Night 2025 once again brought science closer to the public, offering an inspiring mix of national and international research projects presented in an engaging and accessible way. This year's theme, CHAOS: Searching for Order in an Unpredictable World, highlighted how science and technology can uncover hidden patterns and provide solutions to challenges that may appear unpredictable or uncertain.
The DEMADES project team, CEMEA SAS, proudly participated in this prestigious event with two interactive presentations, showcasing bold ideas for the future of space exploration.
1st Interactive presentation: 🌌 Martian Sands – Oxygen and Water Beyond Earth
One of humanity's greatest challenges in space is ensuring access to oxygen and water. Martian rock, containing more than 25% oxygen by weight, offers a promising solution. By extracting oxygen as a by-product in the production of metals through melt chemistry, researchers are developing sustainable methods to support human life beyond Earth.
At European Researchers' Night 2025, visitors joined a lively scientific discussion and experienced a hands-on demonstration led by DEMADES project member Viliam Pavlík (CEMEA SAS), exploring:

2nd Interactive presentation: 🏗️ Lunar Bricks & Martian Concrete – Building the Future Together
Can we build on other planets without transporting materials from Earth? Our second presentation explored how 3D printing with extraterrestrial soil (regolith) could allow the construction of sustainable habitats on the Moon and Mars.
During the event, participants saw 3D-printed models of lunar and Martian dwellings, even took home their own piece of space architecture, and learn how minerals like aluminum, iron, and calcium oxides, together with confirmed water sources, could enable future colonization projects.

On September 26, 2025, DEMADES project team had the pleasure of participating in the Innovation and Digital Transformation Conference, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Bratislava.

DEMADES project and Hydrogen Strategy for Slovakia: 3rd Hydrogen Workshop in Bratislava 24/09/2025

Hydrogen strategy is of crucial importance for Slovakia, both as part of the European Union's broader decarbonization concept and as a pillar of the country's energy independence in times of geopolitical instability.
On September 24, 2025, the 3rd Hydrogen Workshop took place at NH Bratislava Gate One, bringing together experts, policymakers, and researchers to discuss the most pressing hydrogen-related issues in Slovakia. Topics ranged from legislative frameworks, safe utilization, and efficient production methods with minimal resource waste, to the future prospects of hydrogen as the cleanest gas and the potential for producing green hydrogen through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources.
Participants of DEMADES project were actively engaged in the workshop. Their presence ensured close monitoring of all discussions to understand better the key challenges and opportunities facing the hydrogen industry. The project's involvement highlights the importance of innovative solutions and collaborative approaches that can enhance the efficiency and sustainability of hydrogen production.
Special thanks go to Julia Kotulová (Earth Science Institute, Slovak Academy of Sciences) for her insightful speech on the importance of science funding in hydrogen-related research and development. As she emphasized, science is undoubtedly the key to solving the challenges of the hydrogen economy.

Challenger Science Workshop: Exploring Design Thinking

On September 23, a new session of the Challenger Science program took place, organized by Civitta and ESET, with DEMADES project team actively participating.
The highlight of the meeting was an engaging workshop on Design Thinking led by Adam Brocka. Participants were introduced to the fundamentals of design thinking, an approach that encourages a holistic view of problems, in-depth analysis, and the identification of effective solutions. Special attention was given to active listening, empathy in client communication, and the ability to design products that meet real customer needs and create genuine market value.
The workshop also emphasized how constraints can stimulate innovation, as well as the importance of teamwork, efficient communication, and achieving goals collaboratively. Such skills are essential in the ongoing effort to commercialize scientific solutions and successfully bring products to market.
The session concluded with an inspiring talk from Pavol Turčina, CEO of GO SPACE LABS, who shared his entrepreneurial journey and insights into building a successful company. His story served as strong motivation for participants, reinforcing the belief that today's efforts may one day evolve into tomorrow's success stories.

4.09.2025 DEMADES project, represented by project leader Anna Kityk, participated in the IAM-I (Innovative Advanced Materials Initiative) working groups meeting. The DEMADES project team will participate in the final session of a series of hydrogen-focused workshops, organized by the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic in collaboration with the National Hydrogen Association of Slovakia, taking place in Bratislava on 24 September.

Legislative updates and national hydrogen support policies
Strategic planning for Slovakia's hydrogen ecosystem up to 2050
Regulatory frameworks, technical standards, safety, and permitting for hydrogen infrastructure
Participation in this event will allow DEMADES to stay updated on the latest hydrogen-related developments, ensuring our research on novel electrocatalysts using eco-friendly Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) aligns with national and EU goals. Insights from the workshop will support the project's mission to advance clean, sustainable hydrogen production, contributing to the EU Green Deal, EU Hydrogen Strategy, and global decarbonization efforts.

Advanced Electrochemical Training Course for DEMADES Project Team

On August 29th, the Center for Advanced Materials Application (CEMEA SAS) had the pleasure of hosting participants from DEMADES project for an intensive, one-day training course in our Advanced Electrochemical Engineering Laboratory. Led by DEMADES project leader, Assoc. Prof. Anna Kityk, PhD, the course focused on key aspects of green hydrogen production.
The session integrated theoretical principles with hands-on practice, covering the following:
Electrocatalysis Fundamentals: A review of the Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions (HER and OER), including key concepts like overpotential and catalyst design strategies.
Catalyst Synthesis: A practical session on electrodeposition, allowing participants to synthesize nickel-based alloys and composites.
Advanced Characterization: Participants learned how to analyze catalyst properties, such as corrosion resistance, using electrochemical measurements.
Performance and Durability: The day concluded with a deep dive into measuring catalytic activity and stability through various electrochemical tests.
The goal of this program was to provide DEMADES project team with a solid foundation in experimental electrochemistry, thereby driving the project's success in developing next-generation electrocatalysts for efficient green hydrogen production.
DEMADES Project Team Has Won ESET Challenger Science Grant

We are excited to announce that the DEMADES project team has been selected to receive a grant for participation in the Challenger Science program, a special initiative by ESET aimed at helping scientists in Slovakia develop their entrepreneurial potential.
The program offers an intensive combination of workshops, networking opportunities, and personalized guidance to support researchers in:
-Developing entrepreneurial thinking and skills;
-Building relationships with partners and potential customers;
-Identifying opportunities for commercialization;
-Preparing impactful presentations.
Participants will also benefit from individual mentoring and coaching, ensuring that their innovative research ideas have the best chance to reach real-world impact.

We are pleased to announce that our team has recently signed collaboration agreements with several major manufacturers of metal and alloy components for the automotive industry in Slovakia, as well as an international partnership with a company based in Singapore.
These new partnerships mark a significant step toward bringing cutting-edge research closer to real-world applications. DEMADES project is not only about advanced research but also about fostering innovation, cooperation, and the active involvement of industry partners who can help translate novel ideas into sustainable solutions.
By working directly with large-scale producers of metal and alloy parts for the car industry, our team will be able to test and demonstrate advanced surface treatments, eco-friendly processes, and new materials under real production conditions. In parallel, our collaboration with the Singaporean partner opens the door to broader international exchange and new opportunities for knowledge transfer, technology validation, and market development in Asia.

SCI-CONNECT 2025: A Scientific Picnic That United Minds and Sparked Ideas

Science should unite. It should inspire, spark dialogue, and remain open and accessible to all who are curious and passionate. This vision came to life at SCI-CONNECT 2025, an informal scientific picnic held under the open sky and organized by CEMEA SAS in collaboration with the DEMEDES project team.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants: researchers from the DEMEDES project, key scientific teams from CEMEA SAS, international guests, partners from various institutes of Slovak Academy of Sciences, and many other distinguished contributors. It was a true celebration of science in its most human form - collaborative, joyful, and deeply engaging.
Guests enjoyed a vibrant program featuring short scientific talks, informal discussions, live music, and excellent food. The relaxed atmosphere encouraged open dialogue, fostered cross-disciplinary connections, and inspired the exchange of ideas in an environment built on curiosity and mutual respect.
An additional highlight of the event was a presentation by the Technology Transfer Office of CEMEA SAS (Director TTO - Mgr. Miroslav Kubiš), offering a detailed overview of the support available for patenting and commercialization of scientific results. It underlined TTO's strong role as a bridge between cutting-edge research and real-world innovation.
An inspiring speech was delivered by RNDr. Veronika Ostatná, PhD (Czech Republic), who reflected on the enduring importance of scientific schools and mentorship. Her message emphasized the value of knowledge transfer between generations and the lasting impact of experienced researchers guiding young talent.
The event also honored the origins of CEMEA SAS, as its founders, RNDr. Eva Majková, DrSc. and Prof. RNDr. Pavol Šajgalík, DrSc., shared personal stories about CEMEA's foundation and development. The center's director, Assoc. Prof. Miroslav Hnatko, PhD, highlighted CEMEA's current achievements, including its dynamic research teams, numerous local and international projects, and growing impact across scientific disciplines.
Adding to the event's significance was the participation of Mgr. Martin Venhart, DrSc., Chairman of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, who expressed strong support for modern, open formats of scientific exchange. He emphasized that the Academy is committed to promoting transparent communication and encouraging researchers to engage broadly with the community.
SCI-CONNECT 2025 was more than just a gathering; it was a powerful statement about the future of science: informal, inclusive, and accessible. It is with great pride that the DEMEDES project has launched this meaningful tradition. Scientific picnics like this one not only unite researchers and the public but also highlight the energy, creativity, and openness that drive discovery forward.

We are pleased to share that a DEMADES project team member participated in the 8th Conference of the Serbian Society for Ceramic Materials, held on June 18–20, 2025, in Belgrade, Serbia.
Our team presented an abstract and a presentation devoted to the synthesis of TiO₂ nanotubes on Ti-alloy surfaces using eco-friendly deep eutectic solvents. This innovative approach offers an efficient alternative to conventional methods that rely on toxic electrolytes. The resulting highly developed nanotubular surfaces of Ti-alloys demonstrate excellent properties for electro- and photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). In addition, this surface modification can be utilized for biomedical applications involving titanium and its alloys.
Participation in this international conference was a valuable opportunity to present our project results to the scientific community, where our work was recognized for its high quality and innovative contribution.

We Are Slovak Academy of Sciences: Living Science at Every Cell. DEMADES project at a Flagship Public Event of SAS

On June 13-14, 2025, DEMADES project proudly participated in the event titled "We Are Slovak Academy of Sciences: Living Science with Every Cell" ("We are SAS"). This unique public science festival aimed to bring cutting-edge research closer to the general public, and DEMADES project was right at the heart of it.
⚡ Live Hydrogen Production in Action
DEMADES team presented real-time electrolysis demonstrations, showcasing the direct production of green hydrogen from water solution. Visitors were able to see hydrogen being created live, using our specially developed foam electrodes, which served as platforms for:

Strategic Meeting of DEMADES Project Consortium: Advancing Catalytic Innovation Through Interdisciplinary Synergy

Bratislava, 13 May 2025 — DEMADES project, supported under an interregional collaborative framework, reached a significant milestone today with the coordination meeting held at the Centre for Advanced Materials Application of Slovak Academy of Sciences (CEMEA SAS). Under the leadership of Assoc. Prof. Anna Kityk, project coordinator, the event gathered researchers from CEMEA SAS, Institute of Electrical Engineering SAS (IEE SAS, Bratislava), and Institute of Materials Research SAS (IMR SAS, Košice) for a productive hybrid meeting.
The primary objective of the meeting was to assess the current progress and to coordinate upcoming scientific and organizational activities. The event facilitated in-depth discussions on experimental methodologies, material synthesis strategies, and the harmonization of research protocols across partner institutions.
Advancing Scientific Synergy
The project team placed special emphasis on the synthesis and characterization of advanced catalytic materials, a cornerstone of DEMADES initiative. Researchers from IMR SAS, with longstanding expertise in catalysis, proposed novel approaches for material development and evaluation, including advanced strategies for structural and surface modification. Simultaneously, CEMEA SAS introduced conceptual frameworks for the use of novel media in catalyst formation, targeting the generation of highly structured nanoarchitectures with enhanced catalytic properties.
IEE SAS contributed by outlining precise protocols for the characterization of catalytic materials, essential for ensuring reproducibility and cross-validation across laboratories. The integration of these approaches is expected to substantially enhance the scientific rigor and impact of the project.
Innovative concepts such as the integration of 3D-structured supports, including foams and porous architectures, were discussed as effective strategies to increase active surface area and facilitate efficient mass transport within catalytic systems. The dialogue highlighted the team's shared commitment to merging fundamental science with applied innovation.
Fostering Collaboration and Open Science
Beyond technical considerations, the meeting served as a platform for deepening interpersonal and institutional connections. Each partner presented their scientific portfolio, allowing for the identification of complementary expertise and the definition of individual roles within the broader project context.
Crucially, the consortium reaffirmed its commitment to the principles of open science, transparency, and public engagement. Plans for future dissemination, outreach activities, and the promotion of accessibility in research were outlined, emphasizing the project's dual mission of scientific excellence and societal relevance.

The meeting concluded with a clear roadmap for the next phase of the project. Participants expressed enthusiasm for upcoming joint experiments and co-authored publications, underlining the value of sustained, interdisciplinary collaboration.
